Dr. Khoo Ying Hooi is an Associate Professor in International Relations and Human Rights at the University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia. His research focuses on human rights and democracy issues in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on civil society, Southeast Asian politics, and domestic dynamics in Malaysia and Timor-Leste. She also examines how Southeast Asian geopolitics influences domestic political developments, human rights discourse, protest actions, and institutional tensions.
Additionally, Dr. Khoo actively writes about academic freedom and human rights in the context of higher education. She is the author of The Bersih Movement and Democratisation in Malaysia (2020) and Seeds of Dissent (2015). He has also co-edited several volumes, including Social and Political Deglobalisation: Covid-19, Conflict and Uncertainties in Malaysia (2023) and Marginalisation and Human Rights in Southeast Asia (2022). One of his collaborative works, titled Digital Organising of a Global Social Movement: From Conceived to Collective Action, won the Best Paper award at the Information Communication and Society conference (2021).
In the academic field, Dr. Khoo has an extensive publication record, with over 29 scholarly articles, 12 books, and hundreds of citations. His research focuses on human rights, democracy, civil society, academic freedom, and protest movements. He has also managed research funds totaling over RM 228,382. In addition to his academic activities, Dr. Khoo is actively involved as a member of various professional associations and contributes to international forums.
