Prof. Dr. Sunny Ummul Firdaus, S.H., M.H. is a Professor of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in Surakarta, Indonesia. She currently serves as the Chair of Commission II of the Board of Professors at Universitas Sebelas Maret. In her position, she is actively involved in teaching, academic research, and policy discussions on constitutional law, democracy, human rights, and good governance.
Prof. Sunny completed her complete legal education in Indonesia. She earned her Bachelor of Laws (S.H. – Sarjana Hukum) degree from Universitas Sebelas Maret (1989–1993), writing a thesis on the juridical review of brain surgery agreements at PKU Hospital Surakarta. She obtained her Master of Laws (M.H. – Magister Hukum) degree from Universitas Sebelas Maret (2001–2004) with research focused on legal protection for doctors and patients in therapeutic transactions. She earned her Doctorate in Law (S3) from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta (2009–2016), defending a dissertation titled “Limitation of Political Rights in Indonesia’s Democratic System: A Study on the Formulation of Parliamentary Threshold and Electoral Threshold”.
Her primary research interests include constitutional law and democratic governance, electoral systems and political rights, human rights and legal protection, health law and biomedical ethics, as well as the rule of law and good governance. As an active international scholar, Prof. Sunny has participated in academic conferences, visiting lectures, and research discussions at institutions worldwide, including Thammasat University (Thailand), the British School at Rome (Italy), Passau University (Germany), ETH Zurich (Switzerland), Vietnamese National University (Hanoi, Vietnam), Al Azhar University (Cairo, Egypt), as well as academic forums in Manila, Melbourne, and Istanbul.
In recognition of her academic work and service, Prof. Sunny received 1st Place in the Best Article Category at the National Scientific Conference in 2019 from the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia for her publication titled “Dissenting Opinion as an Alternative Reference for Constitutional Judges in Legal Renewal”. In 2024, she was awarded the Satyalancana Karya Satya 10 Years honor medal by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
